I’ve been paying estimated taxes every quarter for 25 years, since I left my full-time to become a freelance writer in 1995. After ten years writing, I started Peace of Mind Organizing in 2005. That’s 25 years of self-employment and 100 estimated tax payments. I know that they’re due January 15, April 15, June 15, and September 15. That’s been engraved in my memory for years.

This is the time of the year in the U.S. where the mail carrier starts bringing in tax-related documents, like W-2 and 1099 forms. To avoid that frantic feeling at tax time when you can’t easily put your hands on these important documents, I encourage you to do yourself a favor today.

Have you finished your taxes yet? If not, the government has a happy surprise: You have an extra weekend to get them done.

I don’t know where the year has gone so far, but it hit me this morning as I was making coffee that I’d better get started on my taxes! My niece and nephew will be visiting from Australia from April 2 to 12 and I leave for the NAPO conference on April 14, so I really need to file my taxes this month.

If you itemize your taxes, taking a deduction for items you’ve donated to charities makes good financial sense. You reduce your tax burden and you don’t have to go through the trouble of trying to sell your unwanted stuff.

It’s that time of the year! I’ve had one client appointment where we pulled together tax information for the accountant, and I’ve started on my own taxes.
I do our taxes with Turbo Tax and have for six years now. Like many people, I don’t enjoy doing taxes. I think the fear of the unknown (Will I have all the information I need? Did I pay enough estimated taxes?) plays a part. Plus, it can be brain bending work.

Here in Missouri, there’s no state sales tax this weekend on certain back-to-school purchases. That includes:

I filed my taxes last weekend. Once that was done, I had to think about what to do with all the supporting documentation. I don’t like to spend much time organizing those papers because I’m fervently hoping that I’ll never have to look at them again. (The only reason I can think of that I would is if I were audited.)

I originally posted this endorsement of Smead’s Tax Organizer almost a year ago. I was back helping the same client with her taxes this week, and we used the tax organizer again. We actually bought a new one and she stored her supporting documents in the old one. Consulting last year’s organizer made this year’s taxes even easier. If you’re compiling documents for your tax preparer, you might find this product handy.

I blogged about the mileage-tracking app Milebug last year, after I realized how much time it was saving me on my taxes. Back then, I was using it on my iPod Touch.

I used to procrastinate on taxes every year. April 15 would roll around and I’d file an extension. Then I’d procrastinate some more. I was known to file two extensions.

I used to be an inveterate procrastinator when it came to taxes. Back then, I was always afraid I’d owe money and the fear of finding that out would paralyze me. Not smart, I know. But it was my emotions, not my brain, making that decision.

I’ve been doing my family’s taxes on TurboTax now for four years. I worked on them almost to the point of completion last weekend (let’s hear it for refunds!) and it went remarkably smoothly.

As I’ve blogged about before, it’s a miracle that mid-February it feels like tax time to me. In years past, I’ve put off even thinking about taxes until April. And sometimes August. And sometimes October. (Never past October, though.)

I have a very rocky relationship history with April 15. More often than not, I’d wake up on tax day with an anxious knot in my stomach and file an extension. Occasionally, I’d submit the taxes that day, but never without stress.

I can’t believe I’m thinking it’s tax time and it’s only January. I literally can’t remember the last time I filed taxes before April 15. I think it was in the 80s, when I filed Form 1040-EZ. The truth of the matter is that I’ve been self-employed since 1995 and in that time I’ve probably have filed an extension more often than I haven’t.

In my life right now, the answer to that question is T-A-X-E-S. I have to hang my head in shame and admit that my taxes aren’t done. But I’m quite sure they will be by the end of the day.
