I love a bargain, but I hate false urgency more. I end up buying things that I regret later, which wastes money and makes me feel bad. That’s why I try to avoid outlet stores. And that’s why I’m going to try hard to avoid perusing the Amazon Prime sales tomorrow and Wednesday.

As you probably know, there is a shortage of cars in the U.S. thanks, apparently, to a shortage of computer chips. That means that you can sell your current car for more money than you might expect. But it also means that it’s hard to find a car to replace it at a reasonable price.

Back in 2017 I bought myself a new vehicle. (I’m still driving it!) For someone like me who is easily overwhelmed by choices, buying a car is never easy. But this time I feel I made it as easy as possible on myself and I wrote this post at the time to share how I did it. If you’re in the market for a car, I hope this will be helpful!

I wrote this blog post in 2015, after a delightful visit from my friend Geralin Thomas. I’ve updated it a little, including adding that Geralin is now selling an inexpensive Wardrobe Wisdom Workbook and adding my new favorite resale shop now that the Scholarshop is closed. Geralin is my secret weapon when it comes to looking good. I’m so lucky (and grateful)!

I dislike artificial pressure to buy, like special sales or outlet stores or even yard or estate sales. Those situations set up a feeling that if you don’t buy now, you’ll miss out. I can’t tell you the number of so-called bargains that I’ve clients declutter over the years. It’s not a bargain if you don’t use it or it clutters up your home.

I had a lovely time creating a capsule wardrobe with my friend and wardrobe advisor, Geralin Thomas. Geralin has been helping me with my clothing since for eight years and I am so grateful for her expert advice.

I bought a car on Friday! That doesn’t happen very often and it’s very exciting. I’m 54 and this is only my fifth car. There’s a picture of me with the new ride, taken at Carmax, the used-car dealership where I bought it.

For the last eight years I’ve been fortunate enough to be friends with Geralin Thomas, a professional organizer and wardrobe consultant who has patiently been trying to educate me on what to wear and how to wear it. (I like looking nice, but I lack confidence in knowing what looks great on me and how to put together outfits.)

My friend and fab professional organizer, Geralin Thomas, came for a visit a couple of weeks ago. One of the services Geralin offers her clients is wardrobe organization, which includes closet organizing and wardrobe selection. She helped me six years ago (time flies!) and I leaped at the chance to have her help me with my wardrobe again.

I gave a talk about organizing and decluttering last Thursday and I ended the talk by suggesting that people shop mindfully. I advised the audience to ask themselves the following questions before buying something:

In the past, I have belonged to Sam’s Club and Costco, the giant discount warehouse stores. About five years ago, we let our Costco membership lapse because we realized we were throwing away so much. For our family of two, bulk shopping just doesn’t make sense.

One of the exhibitors at last week’s NAPO conference was Office Candy, a company that distributes cut and fun office supplies. What’s not to love about that?

My friend, the fabulous organizer Geralin Thomas, just shared on her Facebook fan page a link to a website that can save you some money on holiday shopping. It’s FreeShipping.org, where you can get coupon codes for free shipping from online vendors. Going there first might help you narrow down where you want to shop!

A study from Ohio State University suggests that the longer people touch something they’re considering purchasing, the more money they’re willing to spend on it. Researchers asked study participants to hold an ordinary coffee mug for either 10 or 30 seconds. Then the participants were allowed to bid on the mug in either an open or closed auction. The folks who had held the mug for 30 seconds bid more for it. Four out of seven even bid more than the retail value (which they were aware of).

I had a day yesterday that was absolute heaven. My friend, Geralin Thomas, who among other things does wardrobe consulting, is in town for the annual conference of the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization. She came in a day early, arriving at 8 a.m. yesterday morning, to see me and to do some wardrobe organizing and enhancing.

A week ago, our 14-year-old Panasonic 32” TV bit the dust. It had been threatening to die for a few months, so the sadness of its death was tempered with the excitement over the prospect of buying a modern TV. I was anxious to get one that didn’t weigh 150 pounds and take up so much space.
