Let’s face it, some things are worth spending a lot of time on. Many things are not. Being able to differentiate between the two can save you a lot of time and help you let go of perfectionism.

I was interviewed recently by Jill Farmer for DocWorking: The Whole Physician Podcast. Jill, who is a life coach who focuses on physician clients, and I talked about impact of clutter, the difficulty of decluttering and how perfectionism can get in the way, particularly as it applies to physicians (but really to everyone).

Asking yourself “What do I choose to do?” rather than “What should I do?” or “What do I need to do?” can calm you and actually make your more willing to do the task at hand.

We were tickled to be invited by the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO) to do a virtual presentation for their chapter (and anyone else who wants to buy a ticket) called the Power of Enough…Effort. In this presentation, Shannon and I will be talking about when to know you’ve put enough effort into something.

I enjoy being interviewed on other people’s podcasts. Since I’m a podcaster myself, I’m accustomed to talking on the fly and it’s fun to hear the kinds of questions that other podcasters have for me. Most of the interviews I do explore the confluence of two of my passions: organizing and genealogy. I feel like I can talk forever on that stuff. Most of the interviews I do are audio-only. That’s my sweet spot because I’m not distracted by how I look.

I’m deep into thinking about my 2020 goals. There’s something about a year that ends in zero that makes it feel extra important. Maybe it’s because we’re starting a new decade, The Twenties. (It’s so bizarre that soon The Twenties will have nothing to do with flappers.) I love the process of setting goals for the new year and I really enjoy taking a whole day to work on my goals. This year, like last year, my big retreat day is December 26. I can’t wait!

Amy Johnson Crow, a well-known genealogist, blogger and speaker, is one of my favorite genealogy luminaries. She offers fabulous advice. And I’m delighted to call her my friend.
So I was thrilled when Amy asked me to be a guest on her podcast, Generations Cafe. She and I had a great discussion about downsizing and figuring out what to let go of—both our own items and those of our parents. As genealogists we are both very sensitive to the value that family possessions might (or might not) have for future generations, which can make downsizing especially tricky. I was able to share my perspective as someone who’s spent a lot of time helping people let go of stuff.

You know I love talking about perfectionism on the podcast I co-host with Shannon Wilkinson, Getting to Good Enough. So I was thrilled to be asked to be a guest on Keeping You Organized a weekly podcast presented by Smead, the big filing products manufacturer.

This is the time of year that many of us start thinking about revisiting the goals we set for this year and setting goals for the coming year. I love this process and really enjoy taking a whole day to work on my goals. This year, my big retreat day is December 26. Can’t wait!

The podcast I co-host with my friend, Shannon Wilkinson, Getting to Good Enough, is all about overcoming perfectionism so you can do more of what you love. We launched on June 15, and we’ve published 22 episodes so far. (We’ve actually recorded 24—we keep a buffer of two or three episodes.)

As I’ve mentioned here before, I’ve started a podcast with my friend, Shannon Wilkinson, a life coach in Portland, Oregon. The podcast is called Getting to Good Enough and it’s all about overcoming perfectionism so you can do more of what you love.
We’ve started a feature, Q & A on the 5s, where each episode that ends in five will showcase questions from listeners (and our answers). We’ve set up the GTGE Hotline (413-424-GTGE) where you can call in and leave a message. We’ll address your question or comment on the air in the next Q&A on the 5s episode, using your voice from the voicemail.
