ICD's newly revised Clutter-Hoarding Scale is out

In 2003, the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization (now the Institute for Challenging Disorganization) issued the landmark Clutter Hoarding Scale, an assessment tool that identified five different levels of cluttering and hoarding. It can be used for organizers (or clients) who want to get an objective view of the state of a home. As conditions improve, it can also serve as a measuring tool.

The debut of the Institute for Challenging Disorganization

As of January 1, 2011, the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization (NSGCD) is now officially the Institute for Challenging Disorganization! The NSGCD board voted on the name change in July. The tagline Education. Research. Strategies. was approved in September and the new logo in November.

Highlight reel for 2009

2009 was a year of ups and downs for me. I’m pretty sure I’m not alone. As I finish inputting data into Quickbooks for the year, I realize that my revenue is down, which isn’t great. I’m chalking it up to the economy. But so many really great things happened in 2009 that I view it as a year of success and progress.

I just earned a credential I’m really proud of. I’m now a Certified Professional Organizer in Chronic Disorganization®, a certification conferred by the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganizaton.

I leave in an hour or so to fly to Los Angeles to attend the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization’s annual conference I love this conference and have gone every year since I became an organizer.

Book recommendation: It's Hard to Make a Difference When You Can't Find Your Keys

I just finished reading and analyzing a great book, It’s Hard to Make a Difference When You Can’t Find Your Keys: The Seven-Step Path to Becoming Truly Organized, by Marilyn Paul, Ph.D. for my NSGCD Level III certification program. It’s written for chronically disorganized folks and provides a warm, empathetic, holistic and patient approach to getting organized, even if you’ve lived your whole life being disorganized.

The tragedy of stuff

This weekend, the National Public Radio program Weekend Edition aired a thoughtful essay called The Tragedy of Stuff, The essay was written by Cathy Duchamp, whose ex-husband, Maury, died suddenly, leaving behind an apartment full of stuff. Cathy and her friends were left with the task of clearing it out.

Color me certified!

Yesterday I sat for the examination to become a Certified Professional Organizer®. The certification exam is administered by the Board of Certified Professional Organizers. Certification began in 2007 and since then over 275 professional organizers have become certified. (There are 4,300 members of NAPO.)

The power of clutter

As I posted on Monday I had a crazy-busy week last week, leading a team of five other organizers to help a client get his house cleared out. This week, I’ve been doing follow up on that job. There’s been a certain amount of paperwork associated with it. And I had a NAPO St. Louis chapter meeting this week, which always generates paper.

I just returned from six fabulous days of training, education and networking with my colleagues in the organizing profession. I attended the annual conferences of the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization and the National Association of Professional Organizers. I also attended a one-day training workshop for a great filing system called Freedom Filer.
