The Certified Professional Organizer credential was created by and is governed by the Board of Certification for Professional Organizers® (BCPO®) which was started by NAPO, the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals®. It came about through the hard work of dedicated volunteers who wanted to create a meaningful credential that furthers the mission of advancing the credibility and ethical standards of the organizing industry. BCPO follows the accreditation guidelines set forth by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCAA). It’s the real deal.

Way back in 2008, I earned the credential Certified Professional Organizer® or CPO®. This credential is conferred by the Board of Certification for Professional Organizers as part of an accredited credentialing program. In order to become a CPO, I had to pass an exam that I studied hard for. In order to sit for the exam, I had to have 1500 paid client hours or 1250 paid client hours and 250 equivalent educational hours. (I had the latter.)

Later in the week, I’ll be traveling to Nashville, Tennessee, to attend the annual conference of the Institute for Challenging Disorganization. This is one of two organizing conferences I attend in a typical year. This year, I also attended two genealogy conferences.

I am very proud to have gone through the Level III certification program from the Institute for Challenging Disorganization (back then it was called the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization) and earned the credential Certified Professional Organizer in Chronic Disorganization®. Back in 2009, when I first earned the credential (I recertified this fall), I wrote a blog post about it, called Why training and credentials matter.

At the ICD conference last week, I heard many great speakers. One of them was Fred Luskin, who spoke about forgiveness. A Stanford University professor, Dr. Luskin teaches about happiness and forgiveness, among other topics. His book,Forgive for Good, is very interesting.

I should start this review off with a full disclaimer: as the outgoing marketing director for the Institute for Challenging Disorganization (ICD), I am not an objective reviewer. Not remotely.

Until now, ICD did not offer classes to people who don’t belong to the group. In keeping with its vision of being the “premier resource in chronic disorganization,” ICD is now offering four recorded teleclasses that anyone can take.

At a meeting at the headquarters of the Institute for Challenging Disorganization the other day, the ICD executive director, Beth Quick-Andrews, paid me a big compliment. She mentioned a blog post I’d written a year and a half ago and how she thinks about its message often. She even told me when I’d posted it.

I’ve been traveling and working hard these last couple of weeks. I was in Raleigh, N.C. to attend the Institute for Challenging Disorganization’s annual conference which was, in a word, fantastic. (If somewhat exhausting.)

In 2003, the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization (now the Institute for Challenging Disorganization) issued the landmark Clutter Hoarding Scale, an assessment tool that identified five different levels of cluttering and hoarding. It can be used for organizers (or clients) who want to get an objective view of the state of a home. As conditions improve, it can also serve as a measuring tool.

Last night, the Institute for Challenging Disorganization teleclass was on children who hoard. Kim Anker-Paddon and Leslie Josel, who taught the class, gave us some great case studies as well as a review of the (limited) research on the topic. Fascinating stuff.

There’s little I like better than having fun while learning. And that’s exactly what I’m doing here in San Diego at the NAPO conference.

As of January 1, 2011, the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization (NSGCD) is now officially the Institute for Challenging Disorganization! The NSGCD board voted on the name change in July. The tagline Education. Research. Strategies. was approved in September and the new logo in November.
