As you probably know, there is a shortage of cars in the U.S. thanks, apparently, to a shortage of computer chips. That means that you can sell your current car for more money than you might expect. But it also means that it’s hard to find a car to replace it at a reasonable price.

Back in 2017 I bought myself a new vehicle. (I’m still driving it!) For someone like me who is easily overwhelmed by choices, buying a car is never easy. But this time I feel I made it as easy as possible on myself and I wrote this post at the time to share how I did it. If you’re in the market for a car, I hope this will be helpful!

I bought a car on Friday! That doesn’t happen very often and it’s very exciting. I’m 54 and this is only my fifth car. There’s a picture of me with the new ride, taken at Carmax, the used-car dealership where I bought it.

I’ve learned over the years how easily overwhelmed I am when I have too many choices. I blogged a few years ago about how I prefer buying Apple computers because they limit your choices. I know that one of the reasons I love my tiny wardrobe is that I don’t have to choose from a lot of options when I get dressed.

Do you have little organizing projects around your house that are constantly taunting you? Do you walk through a room, see a pile and say to yourself, “I need to file.” Then just keep walking?

But once I saw the initial announcement about the Apple Watch, I really wanted one. Sure, I know the first gen won’t be as great as future generations. But I still want one. I managed to wait twenty days after orders first were taken before I ordered my own. It will arrive in June and I’m very excited.

Having too many choices can be paralyzing, as I reflected in this post written two years ago, just before I bought my iPhone 4S.
I’m buying an iPhone this week. Yay! I’m a fan of Apple products and love my iPod Touch (which is a now a senior citizen) almost as much as I love my iPad. I adore my MacBook. And I hate my cheap little Android phone. So this week I’m going to invest in an iPhone and I’m really excited about it.

This week I was faced with a tough decision. I’d been contacted by very nice prospective client who is truly ready for (and needs) help. But there was circumstance about her environment that made me uncomfortable.

We all know it’s smart to back up our computers. (We also know it’s smart to do lots of other stuff we might not be doing, like changing our oil religiously every 3,000 miles.) Sometimes actually backing up the computer feels like a big deal.

I gave a talk this week called Letting Go of the Tough Stuff. One of the points I made in that talk is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. Many clients don’t like to part with items they don’t use or love because those items cost a lot to buy. Or they feel the item is worth something and they can’t just give it away, but selling it feels too complicated or labor-intenstive, so it gets put off.

Choice is a good thing. I think that having lots of options can feel very freeing. But when there are too many choices, it can be very hard to make a decision. I was reflecting on this today because I started out the day actually scheduling what I was going to do every hour. Today I’m playing catch-up after a visit to my family in Washington state. There’s a whole lot of disarray in the house and lots of email to catch up on and I found myself being pretty ineffective in the two days since I’ve been home.

When I talk with clients or give talks, I’ll often make this statement:
Clutter is nothing but delayed decisions.
And then I’ll urge folks to make decisions, rather than delaying them.

Every now and then I read a message on a forum or somewhere from someone who’s lost all their data in a computer crash. That person is kindly reminding people to back up their computers, to avoid the heartbreak of everything vanishing into thin air.
I’m happy to say this isn’t one of those messages. I haven’t suffered a computer crash. In fact, I’ve had no computer problems to speak of since I bought my MacBook in July of 2007.

Many of my clients have a difficult time making decisions. That’s not too surprising, since most of my clients are dealing with clutter issues and clutter is all about delayed decisions.
