In the spring of 2016, I read the book Profit First by Mike Michalowicz. I had heard a talk about the Profit First concept from Cathy Sexton of The Productivity Experts who gave a presentation about it to the St. Louis chapter of the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals. I was intrigued so I bought the book. After I read the book, I decided to implement it. It’s been wonderful for my business.

In 2014, I added a guide to the collection aimed at helping people who want to start an organizing business. The most widely read post on this blog is my post on becoming a professional organizer. (Watch for a new update to that post soon!) I wrote that guide to help provide more in-depth information for new or aspiring organizers.
Yesterday, I added two more guides for new organizers and renamed the series the Insider’s Guides for New Organizers. Currently there are three available:

Today, I added a new Organizing Guide to the collection, bringing the total up to nine. It’s called Living the dream: 10 ingredients for a successful organizing business. My blog post on becoming a professional organizer outlines strategies for getting started. My new guide outlines the essential elements I’ve identified for creating and maintaining success as an organizer.

It’s the last day of the year and I’ve been taking the opportunity to reflect on 2008. On the surface, it wasn’t necessarily a great year for business. As the economy tanked, so did my billable hours. After a terrific first two quarters, the last two quarters were…let’s just say less good.

Yesterday I heard a little story on NPR’s Morning Edition about the fact that High Point University in High Point, North Carolina, has a Director of Wow, whose job it is to make the college experience extraordinary for the students. According to the NPR story, the university has instituted programs like ice cream trucks, valet parking, a concierge desk, and free snacks
